Parliament of Malaysia wants UN to make Israel face a war crime tribunal

The special Parliament session has called on the United Nations to immediately form an international war crimes tribunal to investigate Israeli's atrocities and violence on the Palestinian people.

"The attacks by Israel has contravened international laws and such actions are deemed as a war crime as stated under Fourth Schedule of the Geneva Convention on the protection for civilians in wartime," said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The demand was part of ten resolutions proposed by Abdullah who tabled the motion to discuss the Israeli invasion of Gaza in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

The resolutions were:

- to propose that the House strongly condemn the inhumane attacks by the Israeli regime on the Palestinian territory which had resulted on the loss of lives comprising women, babies and the elderly;

- to urge the UN Security Council to compel Israel to stop its military attacks immediately and send in UN peacekeepers to maintain ceasefire;

- to urge the UN to hold an emergency session on "Uniting for Peace" under Resolution 377a (v);

- to urge the parties involved in the conflict to continue peace efforts and comply with UN resolutions on the Palestinian issue;

- to co-operate with the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Arab League and other organisations to call for the upholding of the principles of international law and the UN Charter to address the conflict;

- to express the support of Malaysians on the struggle of the Palestinian people to create an independent and sovereign Palestinian state;

- to urge the international community to immediately offer humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people in Gaza.

Abdullah said the resolutions would be presented to the relevant parliaments, the US Congress and the European Parliament.

"Today, at least 800 people have been killed in Gaza, 3,000 are wounded, and 15,000 more have become refugees after Israel launched the attack codenamed "Cast Lead" on December 27, 2008.

"The Israeli military forces used F-16 fighter jets, while its air force killed 200 Palestinian on the first day of the attacks alone," he added.

Abdullah said all Malaysians should unite and take a strong stand to the world on the inhumane actions by the Zionist regime on the Palestinian people, especially those in Gaza.

Forty-four ambassadors and 32 charge d’ affairs based in Kuala Lumpur attended the session on the invitation of Wisma Putra. The United States and Britain sent no representatives.
