English is the language of the future

I read with great concern about the third in a series of roundtable discussions on the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English.

It is my hope that our Education Minister will seriously consider retaining Mathematics and Science in English. I feel that it is of utmost importance if we want to see a breakthrough for the next generation to excel in English.

I do not think I have to elaborate on its importance as everyone is aware that it is one of the most used international languages.

If our authorities are serious in helping the next generation to acquire a reasonable command of English, these children must be exposed to the language every day.

English words and terms that they would be learning from these two subjects would definitely help to increase their command.

My daughter appreciates the use of English for these two subjects. It is because of her ability to understand English, she enjoys reading.

At the age of nine, she was already able to read Enid Blyton’s upper grade story books.

Today, she reads novels and all types of books and magazines which are so readily available in any book store.

She also finds the language useful because she can readily find her answers or materials on the Internet.

I am working in a reasonably big organisation and we have many young graduates. Most of these graduates obtained very good overall results. My most disheartening experience with them, however, is that almost 90% of them are unable to write proper and simple English.

Sometimes I feel angry and frustrated having to correct every sentence in their email or letter simply because they sound so ridiculous.

It also reflects on our image if such letters were allowed out of the company.

I don’t blame them but sympathise with them. I also see how they struggle to speak well in English when they meet foreign visitors. This will also undermine their confidence.

I sincerely appeal to the Education Ministry to better equip our children for the challenges they will face tomorrow.

What we decide today will determine their future. Decide wisely and do not let pride hinder our progress.
