Work for UMNO - Abdullah
The Umno president said the battle in Kuala Terengganu was between Barisan Nasional and the Opposition.
“I do not want Umno members to go campaigning to win supreme council and Wanita positions in the party elections,” he said.
He urged party members to cooperate with each other instead of forming factions that would lead to in-fighting.
“The responsibility is to have a victory in Kuala Terengganu. The party must come first,” he told reporters on the last day of his visit to Iran.
He said it was important to defend the seat as the electorate had already given Barisan the mandate to serve after the March general election.
The Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Barisan MP Datuk Razali Ismail in November.
Deputy Home Minister Senator Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh is Barisan’s candidate while the Opposition will name its candidate on Jan 1.
“We now have a candidate who has the potential to become a good wakil rakyat for Kuala Terengganu,” Abdullah said.
On another matter, the Prime Minister condemned the act of throwing shoes at outgoing US President George W. Bush.
“We can issue strong statements and object aggressively if we are not satisfied. But it is not necessary to act in such a demeaning way,” he said.
Last week, an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at Bush during a press conference in Baghdad.
Abdullah arrived home last night after his four-day official visit to Iran. The plane carrying Abdullah, who was accompanied by wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, touched down at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Subang at about 12.20am.
Following bilateral talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, three agreements were inked between Malaysia and Iran, one of which was to facilitate the setting up of a Proton Gen.2 assembly plant in Iran in April next year.
