Equal treatment for all parties - EC

All parties will be given equal treatment in every aspect on nomination day today, right up to the number of supporters who are allowed to accompany the candidates.

Newly appointed Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof said only 150 supporters from each side can enter the State Stadium where the nomination process will take place.

“We will also keep the supporters about 100m apart so that they cannot create problems like antagonising the other side or throwing things like water bottles and other missiles,” he told reporters after overseeing the preparation at the stadium yesterday.

Abdul Aziz, who only became the commission’s chairman five days ago, said he would like all parties to exercise proper decorum and refrain from doing or saying anything that could be perceived as challenging the other side.

“Let this by-election be a gentleman’s fight between those involved and not one marred by ugly incidents like in the past,” he added.

Abdul Aziz said 11 nomination forms had been purchased so far, although the commission expected the by-election to involve four candidates at most, including those from Barisan Nasional and PAS.

He said voters could check their status through the commission’s website at www.spr.gov.my or via SMS by typing SPR, space, followed by the identity card number and sending it to 15888 or by calling the state SPR hotline at 09-62212181 or 09-6236161.
