Benefits for all in Terengganu - MCA
From the feedback gathered, it has been proven that minority groups including the Chinese received fair distribution of the resources, he said.
“It is not for the sake of the general election or by-election. This has been a genuine gesture by the state government,” he told reporters after attending the Kuala Terengganu MCA by-election briefing at the state MCA headquarters yesterday.
He said the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election would be a test for the long-existing genuine partnership between the state Umno and MCA.
“Over the years, the partnership and harmonious relationship between the ethnic groups, primarily between Malays and Chinese as well as other races, has been one of the shining models in the country.
“When I say this will be a litmus test, it is our sincere wish to see that people endorse the continuation of such a genuine partnership,” he said.
Ong said PAS was given the chance to rule the state in 1999 but it was subsequently defeated in 2004.
He noted that PAS had been harping on the welfare state concept before the March general election to woo the Chinese voters.
“But I must say that our memory will not fail us as far as this is concerned. And we must question what happens thereafter.
“The welfare state slogan is still in our minds but what we have been seeing so far is that PAS has again raised the issue of Islamic statehood. We would like to know how they are going to reconcile the two,” Ong said.
He stressed that MCA’s stand was clear, that the party could never accept anything contrary to the Federal Constitution.
