Six held while putting up posters

Six PKR members including Terengganu Youth head Fariz Musa were arrested but later released on police bail pending further probe into allegations of criminal intimidation.

The six were picked up before dawn while they were putting to posters of murdered Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu around the state capital.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar confirmed the release of the six who were arrested at Jalan Cerung Lanjut.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak declined comment, saying anyone would be arrested if they broke the law.

PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin questioned the police’s motive in arresting the six.

Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof also expressed regret over the incident, adding that there was no reason for anyone to resort to such action as the posters had no bearing on the upcoming by-election.

On another issue, Syed Hamid said a strong police presence was not a form of intimidation but an effort to maintain security and ensure that the democratic process would proceed smoothly.
