Surprise independent candidate files nomination papers at last minute

The Kuala Terengganu by-election will see a three-way fight involving the Barisan Nasional, PAS and an independent.

Returning officer Datuk Mat Razali Kassim said Barisan candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh filed his papers at 9.13am, followed by PAS candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut five minutes later.

A surprise candidate, Azharuddin Mamat @ Adam, handed in his nomination papers two minutes before nominations closed.

The 46-year-old Azharuddin had arrived at 9.20am but was seen leaving the nomination centre a few minutes later, presumedly to look for an eligible sponsor and seconder.

The fight for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat has begun with three candidates entering the fray.

The Barisan Nasional and PAS candidates, namely Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Farid Wan Salleh and Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut had been announced earlier but Azharuddin Mamat @ Adam candidacy came as a surprise.
