Great rewards after fasting
To begin with, the Muslims completed fasting in the month of Ramadan; and most of them were united with their parents and families during Eid celebrations.
In one of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, a person who fulfils the obligation of fasting will get two rewards or will be doubly happy; happy during Eid celebrations, and happy in the Hereafter when he will get his just rewards for all his deeds.
During Eid celebrations, therefore, we are indeed encouraged to show our gratitude and happiness, and share it with the others.
Muslims are encouraged to wear their best clothes on Eid, and along with other Muslims, to congregate at the mosque to perform special Eid prayers.
We also need to give alms (zakat al-fitr) to the less fortunate members of society. In this manner the joy of Eid will spread to others, and inculcate the spirit of giving to society.
In fact, one of the lessons learned from fasting is to experience the hardship of others so that one will appreciate whatever Allah has bestowed.
At times we take all the good things that we enjoy daily for granted, without thinking that there are some who do not even have enough for themselves, let alone families. Fasting and giving alms to the poor help to educate.
We also praise Allah for making it possible for us to celebrate Eid in peace and prosperity. Although the price of goods is increasing due to the rising cost of energy, celebrations in our country are relatively peaceful, away from the conflict and strife faced by other nations.
We feel regret and pity for our brothers and sisters in other parts of the Muslim world. Some of them are forced to celebrate Eid in the midst of war and conflict. Others have to contend with natural disasters.
Their children do not have the luxury of celebrating Eid like our kids do. May God alleviate their suffering and grant them abundant reward.
Let us take this blessed opportunity during Eid to foster stronger kinship. We should forgive, and seek forgiveness for our shortcomings.
Selamat Hari Raya!
