Malaysians stand united against Israel’s Gaza attack

Malaysians throughout the nation stood together to express their disgust with Israel’s attack on Gaza which has claimed nearly 800 innocent lives since it began two weeks ago.

MCA Youth launched a nationwide signature campaign titled “Say No To War In Gaza” to end the bloodshed of innocent Palestinians

The movement’s chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said that although it was not an Islamic body, it condoned peace and was against the Israeli regime’s aggression.

“We are saddened to see media reports on the killing of women and children in Gaza. It is very shocking that this group was targeted by the Israeli army,” he said.

Thousands of demonstrators also marched to the United States Embassy yesterday to hand over a memorandum of protest against Israel’s onslaught in Gaza.

The demonstration, organised by the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs Against Persecution of Palestinians (Complete), were joined by members of PAS, Jamaah Islam Malaysia and Palestinians residing in Malaysia.

They started marching towards the embassy at 2.20pm after Friday prayers.

A delegate of 14 people headed by PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa and coalition chairman Adnan Mohd Tahir were allowed through to hand over the memorandum that was received by an embassy representative on behalf of the US ambassador.

The crowd dispersed at 3.20pm.

In George Town, more than 500 people from NGOs and political parties gathered outside Kapitan Keling Mosque after Friday prayers to protest against Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Also present was Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who called for an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli troops.

During the demostration, Penang-based Citizens International called for the setting up of a United Nations War Crimes Commission under Article 22 of the UN Charter.

At Universiti Sains Malaysia, more than 200 students gathered for two hours outside the university mosque to protest against the Israeli attack.

Organiser Ooi Hwa Ree, 21, said they have started collecting signatures since Wednesday in support of the campaign.

The Council of Churches Malaysia called on the political leaders of Israel and Palestine for an immediate negotiated ceasefire.

Its general-secretary Rev Dr Hermen Shastri said they must ensure all measures were taken to protect civilians and for international relief agencies to have unfettered access to provide humanitarian aid.

“Israeli air strikes must end along with further threats of increased military action. Palestinian militant groups must also cease all current and future attacks on Israel,” he said.
